New campaign to increase students' awareness of depression

New research has indicated that one in 13 college students in Ireland suffers from depression.

The research was carried out by the organisers of a new campaign, titled Mind Yourselves, which aims to remove the stigma that can often be associated with the condition.

The campaign, which is being launched today, also aims to encourage students to recognise the symptoms of depression in friends and classmates and to reach out to those they think might be affected.

Psychotherapist Trish Murphy is involved with the new scheme and says many students have all the symptoms of depression, but will not admit to being depressed and won’t get help as they are worried what their peers will think of them.
