North: Seaside Samurai sword attack

A man was slashed with a Samurai sword inside a seaside amusement arcade, police said today.

Neck and arm wounds were inflicted on the victim, in his 50s, during the attack in Newcastle, Co Down.

He also fell and gashed his head in the struggle.

Detectives probing the Sunday night assault arrested a man in his 30s. At one stage, the owner of the arcade intervened to stop the blows.

Police said he used a chair to shield the victim from further injuries. The victim was attacked after going into the arcade on the town’s Main Street just before midnight. He was treated at the scene by an ambulance crew.

Clothing and other items belonging to him were seized by police.

Detectives were returning to the scene of the attack today to search for new evidence.

The man was arrested at Islands car park off the Bryansford Road just before 1am today.

Police said he was assisting with inquiries into the incident.
