New probe into food dyes

The Food Safety Authority is reportedly examining whether a newly-identified group of harmful dyes could be present in products sold in Ireland.

Reports this morning said the new dyes were identified in a European review conducted in the wake of the Sudan Red 1 scare earlier this year.

More than 40 food products were removed from the shelves in Ireland when it emerged they contained the banned colorant, which can cause cancer.

The FSA has insisted that there is no evidence yet to suggest the newly-identified group of dyes are present in Irish food.
