Inquest into woman's brutal killing to resume

An inquest into the death of a mother-of-two found murdered in her Co Dublin home is due to resume today.

Rachel O’Reilly was found lying with fatal head injuries inside her house in Baldarragh, near The Naul. She had been battered to death with a blunt instrument.

The 30-year-old had left her two young boys to school before returning home. It is believed her killer was lying in wait for her.

The hearing into her death is scheduled to resume at Dublin County Coroner’s Court, sitting at a Tallaght hotel. It was opened and adjourned in March.

Gardaí believe that Mrs O’Reilly died sometime between 9.30am and 11.30am on October 4, 2004.

Detectives leading the investigation suspect that when she returned home after dropping her two sons to national school and to Montessori her killer was waiting for her.

A post mortem exam revealed that she died after she was struck with a blunt instrument.

Mobile phone records from the chief suspect have been gathered by gardaí while a nationwide check for a make of car believed to have been used by the killer has also been carried out.

The possibility that the suspect may have hired someone else to carry out the killing has not yet been dismissed.

Mrs O’Reilly’s body was exhumed from her grave in Fingal cemetery in March. It was reported that a document was recovered from the coffin which could be used to catch the killer.

While a number of people were arrested as part of the murder investigation, to date no-one has been charged.

A full file on the case is expected to go to the Director of Public Prosecutions within weeks.
