Gardaí hunting the killer of a pensioner in Mullingar tonight made their first arrest.

Retired engineer Michael Creighton was found bound and badly beaten in his flat off Castle Street in the town on Sunday evening.

A garda spokesman said tonight that a man in his 20s was arrested in the Mullingar area after 5pm this evening.

“The man is being detained at Mullingar garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act,” he added.

Detectives had been carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the town all week.

Mr Creighton, who was single and a native of Co Galway, was very popular in the local community.
