Colombia Three being interviewed by gardaí in Dublin

Gardaí in Dublin have revealed that they are currently interviewing the so-called Colombia Three at different stations in the city.

The three - James Monaghan, Martin McCauley and Niall Connolly - are currently on the run from Colombian justice after being convicted of training anti-government rebels in the South American country.

The three, who all have republican connections, returned to Ireland some time in recent weeks without the knowledge of the gardaí and said they hoped the Irish authorities would not send back to Colombia.

Their supporters claim they are innocent and were convicted following an unfair trial in a country renowned for human rights abuses.

In a statement today, gardaí said they had been in ongoing contact with legal representatives of the three men and were questioning them in Dublin.

They refused to answer any further questions about the matter.
