Fire threatens 115 homes in east Belfast

A total of 115 homes have been evacuated in East Belfast because of a major fire in the area yesterday afternoon.

A total of 115 homes have been evacuated in East Belfast because of a major fire in the area yesterday afternoon.

Residents were forced to spend the night in a nearby leisure centre after a fire broke out in a garage on Avoniel Road at about 2.30pm.

A number of gas cylinders exploded threatening the houses Avoniel Parade, Avoniel Drive and Avoniel Road.

The 80 firefighters, who brought the blaze under control, are being praised for their courage.

The residents will be allowed to return to their homes later today.
