More than a quarter of Irish people give tips to waiters and waitresses regardless of the quality of service they provide, according to a survey conducted by a consultancy firm.

More than a quarter of Irish people give tips to waiters and waitresses regardless of the quality of service they provide, according to a survey conducted by a consultancy firm.

The company, Viewpoint, said 28% of the almost 2,000 respondents to the survey said they gave tips even when the service they received was poor.

However, 64% said they would withhold a tip as a result of poor service.

Viewpoint said older people were more likely to withhold tips if they were unhappy.
