Empey ahead in first count of UUP leadership battle
At the end of the first count in the Ulster Unionist leadership battle there was 29 votes between Sir Reg Empey and Alan McFarland.
Sir Reg was on 295 votes, Mr McFarland on 266 and David McNarry on 54 votes.
The sources inside the hall said Mr McNarry had given a passionate speech.
Mr McFarland had also impressed delegates with a measured performance.
Sir Reg Empey had been the favourite but some delegates described his performance as disappointing despite coming out ahead at the end of the first count.
