FG seeks independent body to inspect nursing homes

Fine Gael is calling for an independent national inspectorate to examine conditions in Irish nursing homes following a documentary broadcast last night.

The Prime Time documentary highlighted appalling conditions and a sub-standard level of care at the Leas Cross nursing home in Swords, Co Dublin.

The programme, based on an undercover investigation, showed patients being mistreated by poorly-trained staff.

The operators of the nursing home had taken a High Court case in an effort to prevent the programme from being screened, but their application was rejected.
