Hopes LRC can resolve Gama dispute

Unions representing workers at the Turkish construction firm accused of exploiting workers in Ireland are hoping company representatives will agree to attend talks at the Labour Relations Commission today.

The discussions were arranged following weeks of protests by hundreds of Turks employed by Gama Construction on major infrastructural projects throughout the country.

The workers have accused the company of paying them as little as €2-an-hour for working up to 80 hours-a-week.

Gama initially said it would attend LRC talks, but has since insisted that it will not do so unless workers lift pickets on some of its construction sites.

An investigation by the Labour Court could follow if the company does not participate in today's meeting.
