Young people urged to oppose Govt’s ASBO plans

The National Youth Council has called on young people to oppose the Government's plans to introduce controversial anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs).

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is planning to introduce the orders to crack down on out-of-control youngsters, despite opposition from a range of groups working with children.

The orders are imposed on a civil basis and require the recipient to refrain from engaging in certain activities or entering certain areas.

A breach of the order is considered a criminal offence, meaning the subject can be jailed if he or she fails to comply.

The National Youth Council has described the measure as repressive and has said it will do nothing to address the real causes of anti-social behaviour.

Council director Mary Cunningham said: "Anti-social behaviour orders are not a serious solution. They're a cosmetic solution so the Government can point to the fact that they're doing something."
