Campaigners urge Cullen to fund Western rail plans
Transport Minister Martin Cullen is under pressure to announce funding for the Western Rail Corridor at a conference in Co Mayo today.
Campaigners for the move are due to meet the minister to discuss their demand for the re-opening of the rail link between Sligo, Galway and Limerick within five years.
A renewed section of the line between Ennis and Limerick carried 130,000 people in its first year of operations in 2004.
Local campaigners believe the remainder of the line is also economically viable and would boost tourism in the region.
