A customer who prevented a robbery at a post office in Dublin was today recovering in hospital.

A customer who prevented a robbery at a post office in Dublin was today recovering in hospital.

The man was inside the post office on Botanic Road in Glasnevin at around 10.30am when a raider wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife and an imitation firearm began threatening staff and customers.

The customer tackled the raider and in the struggle, they both fell through the front window of the office. Another customer held down the raider until the gardaí arrived.

A Garda spokesman said: “A man in his 20s was arrested and he is being held at Store Street Garda station.”

The customer was taken to the Mater Hospital to receive treatment for facial injuries received when he fell through the window.

An Post said it was concerned for the welfare of the customer and the staff, who were shocked by the robbery.

“It was a very traumatic experience for all concerned,” said a spokeswoman.

The Botanic Road post office remained closed today while gardaí gathered forensic evidence.
