Food safety body issues warning about illegal colorant
The Food Safety Authority has issued a new alert about food products containing an illegal food colorant that may cause cancer.
The authority said today that the Para Red industrial dye had been found in a number of foodstuffs in the UK and it was working to ensure these products were removed from Irish shelves.
A list of the products in question is available on the authority's website.
The FSAI said Para Red was similar to Sudan Red 1, the carcinogenic dye that was discovered in scores of products on sale in Ireland earlier this year.
