Trocaire predicts failure to meet poverty reduction targets
Trocaire has predicted that the international community will fail to meet its target of halving the number of people living in poverty globally by 2015.
The target is contained in the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, but Trocaire director Justin Kilcullen said it could not be realised at the present rate of progress.
"The World Bank estimated that, to achieve the goals, the amount of development aid in the world would have to double, yet we know that our own Government, for instance, backed down on its commitment to reach the UN target of 0.7% [of GNP] by the year 2007," he said.
