Harney to meet parents group over organ retention inquiry

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney is due to meet the Parents for Justice group today to discuss the stalled investigation into the retention of children's organs by Irish hospitals.

The matter was being investigated by the Dunne Inquiry, but that inquiry was shut down by Ms Harney earlier this year without producing a final report.

It is unclear how the Government plans to complete the inquiry, which was investigating the retention of children's organs and any possible links between pharmaceutical companies and the practice.

Speaking ahead of today's talks, Fionnula O'Reilly from Parents for Justice said the group would be pushing for a new statutory inquiry.

"Parents are deeply anxious to find out, to establish the facts of what was going on in post mortem rooms in this country for the last 20 or 30 years," she said.
