The proportion of children born outside marriage in Ireland almost doubled in the 10 years between 1992 and 2001, according to a report published today by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

The ESRI said unmarried mothers accounted for more than 30% of women giving birth in 2001, compared to an estimated 16.5% in 1992.
