Man held over attack on Poles

A man was being questioned tonight by police about an attack on two Polish men in Co Derry.

However following fresh information, police were keeping an open mind tonight on the reason for the attack but had not ruled out a racist motive.

The victims had been at a party in the Moneydig Road in Garvagh and reported they had been assaulted.

One of the men was admitted to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine with injuries that include a broken arm.

The other was unhurt but was in a state of shock.

Police said both men worked for a local company but had a limited knowledge of English.

It is understood the man who was arrested is from the Garvagh area.

Detective Inspector Nick McCaw, who is in charge of the investigation, appealed for anyone who was at the party or was walking or driving along the Moneydig Road between 3am and 6pm to pass on information to his team.
