As many as 350 Irish babies annually could be born with defects because of excessive alcohol consumption by expectant mothers.

A medical expert at Trinity College is warning of a critical need for society to address the growing culture of binge drinking among pregnant young women.

Professor Susan Ryan said that no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy.

Professor Ryan said today that drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in physical abnormalities, behavioural problems and learning disabilities.
