The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has claimed that Government initiatives to address overcrowding in accident and emergency departments are having an effect.

Speaking in the Dáil this morning, Mr Ahern said: "We are buying beds from the private sector for step-down care for hundreds of patients this year who no longer need to stay in a hospital and that is now working."
