A full recount of votes in the Údarás na Gaeltachta elections is due to get underway in the Galway constituency this morning.

The recount was requested by Fine Gael after the Progressive Democrats candidate took the last of the six seats by just 10 votes.

One of the seats went to an independent candidate, the other four were won by Fianna Fáil.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin is celebrating its first ever victory in Údarás elections after its candidate, Gráinne Mhic Geidigh, took a seat in Donegal.

Overall, Fianna Fáil is set to retain its majority on the Gaeltacht council.
