Many toys sold in Ireland do not meet EU safety standards - study

A significant proportion of toys sold in Ireland do not conform to EU safety standards, according to a study conducted by the Consumers' Association.

The association said tests it conducted on a sample of toys found that one third did not confirm to safety standards for electrical properties.

Almost half also failed to meet EU standards for mechanical and physical properties.

The Consumers Association said this was particularly worrying as a survey it carried out found that 76% of parents never check toys for the CE mark, the European stamp of approval.
