Ballymun tower to be felled by implosion
One of Dublin's famous Ballymun towers is to be demolished this morning.
A controlled explosion will be carried out on the Sean McDermott Tower at the North Dublin flats complex.
Almost 30 years after they were built, the first controlled implosion is being carried out to fell one of the 15-storey Ballymun Towers.
It marks the beginning of a new era for Ballymun. The seven towers and 29 blocks of flats are to be torn down and replaced by 4,000 new homes by 2010.
Almost 10,000 people are being rehoused under the massive regeneration project.
A new main street, playgrounds, and community centre are also planned for the area.
The demolition had been planned for last week, but was delayed because of the death of a construction worker on the site.
