Inquest hears of schoolboy's death in goalpost tragedy

A verdict of accidental death was recorded at the inquest at Limerick's Coroners Court this afternoon of a schoolboy killed when a goalpost fell on him.

Andrew Fitzgerald, aged 10, died in August last year when a goalpost fell on him during a soccer camp near the village of Bruff.

The court has recommended that all portable goalposts should be anchored to the ground when being used by sporting clubs in the future.

Following today’s inquest his mother Miriam spoke to Limerick Live 95 fm about her loss. She suggested: "If a law was put in place then Andy's death may be the reason for another child being saved injury or disablement, or even death and any parent being spared this horrific grief."
