Body of newborn baby discovered in Ballina

The body of a newborn baby has been found this afternoon in Ballina, County Mayo.

The discovery was made at 2.00pm in Kilgalligan, in Carrateigue.

A group of local youths found the baby's remains in a shallow grave on open ground.

The scene is being preserved for a technical examination and the state pathologist has been called in.

The Gardaí said that they are not releasing any further details about the baby.

However, they are asking the mother to contact them and assuring her that she will be treated with sympathy and confidence.
