Gardaí are investigating a second blaze in just six weeks at a school in Co Kerry, it was confirmed today.

The fire damaged the principal’s office in a pre-fab building at CBS secondary school in Dingle.

A garda at Dingle Police Station said: “We are investigating it and an examination of the scene is being carried out. We won’t know if it was deliberately started or accidental until we get the examination results. By the fact it is a second one, you would be worried about it.”

Gardaí said the second fire in the temporary building was discovered last night.

The pre-fab buildings were erected to accommodate the pupils after the first fire over Christmas break severely disrupted classes, as about €250,000 worth of damage was done.

Six classrooms and an office area in the 132-year-old building were badly damaged in the earlier incident, which was discovered on January 1.

Dingle garda station fingerprinted about 250 pupils attending the school as part of the investigation.

An officer confirmed the investigation and fingerprint comparisons were continuing.

Gardaí said the first fire started after a break-in. However, there were no accelerants used to start the blaze.
