The Irish Farmers Association is due to mount a demonstration at the Greencore AGM in Dublin today in protest at the company's decision to close factories in Carlow and Offaly.

The association has claimed that the planned closure of the Carlow sugar factory and the Maltings in Bannagher, Co Offaly, are unjustified.

Spokesman John Keogh said the IFA was hoping Greencore might defer the closures.

"We hope that common sense would prevail and that they would not just simply decide, with consulting anybody, to close a profitable factory," he said.
