Greencore expected to announce closure of Carlow sugar plant

Greencore is expected to announce the closure of one of its two Irish sugar factories today, with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

An announcement is expected following a board meeting this afternoon.

The board is expected to decide to shut the Carlow factory, as the one in Mallow has more advanced technology and better transport links.

Two hundred permanent and 150 seasonal staff will lose their jobs if the Carlow factory closes.

The Irish Farmers Association said the closure of either of the factories would cause major headaches for farmers.
