Safety review urged at Galway event pier

Galway City Council has been urged to review safety procedures on Nimmos Pier after a temporary ice rink was blown from the pier into the River Corrib over the weekend.

The incident happened on Sunday night, when the tent and its contents were carried into the river by a strong wind.

Many events are held in the same location every year and a temporary tent is set up there for the annual Galway Oyster Festival.

Local Councillor Niall O'Brolchain has called for an urgent review of safety on the pier before any more events are held.

"If other events are going to take place on that site, we need to be certain that it is perfectly safe for people to take part," he said.
