Special needs school praised by Minister
A multi-denominational school for children with special needs was today praised by the Minister for Education.
Ms Mary Hanafin complimented the Marino National School in Co Wicklow for its “child-centred approach which enables students achieve maximum independence and academic achievement they might not otherwise have”.
The minister was speaking after opening a new building for the Bray school, to which her department contributed €4.5m in funding.
Marino is run by Enable Ireland and can cater for up to 47 pupils ranging in age from 4-18 years.
It also runs placements for students with physical disabilities with local mainstream primary and post primary schools, stretching from Shankill to Arklow.
Ms Hanafin said: “Marino School provides equal opportunities for all its children to develop to their full potential – irrespective of ability, race, gender or physical disability.
“By developing links with other local primary and post primary schools in the area friendships and understanding have built up to allow this school give all a positive learning experience.
“The aim of our education system is to ensure that all students achieve their full potential and participate fully as members of society.
“All those involved with Marino school should be proud of their achievements and the wonderful new building which will be a valuable resource for the local community as well.”
