An original copy of the 1916 Proclamation of Independence is due to be auctioned in Sotheby’s of London next week.

On Wednesday night, an anonymous telephone bidder paid €390,000 at an auction in Dublin for another copy of the document, only 20 of which are known to exist.

Many of the failed bidders from that auction are expected to place bids at next Thursday’s sale in Sotheby’s.

The copy on sale in London is in better condition that the one sold in Dublin this week and was authenticated by the printer of the proclamation, Christopher Brady, in 1969.

It is being sold by an Irish family.
