A mob pelted police with bottles as trouble flared in north Belfast overnight.

Officers who used CS spray to quell a 200-strong crowd made six arrests.

They were called to Baltic Avenue at about 12.45am to deal with two rival groups of revellers who were fighting, a police spokesman said.

At first about 40 people were involved, but while officers tried to break up the clashes numbers swelled.

“As police were working to make arrests, sections of the growing crowd began to attack them with bottles and other missiles,” the spokesman added.

Four men and two women were held for questioning once order was restored.
