LUAS officials facing questions about spate of tram crashes

LUAS officials are due to appear before the Dáil transport committee today to explain the large number of accidents involving the new trams in the capital.

Private vehicles have collided with the trams on several occasions since the system went into operation in June, while there has also been at least one derailment.

Four people were hospitalised last month following two collisions in the space of as many days between private cars and trams on the Red Line, which only became operational in September.

The Rail Procurement Agency has blamed motorists for all of the collisions and has advised them to pay more attention to red lights at LUAS junctions.
