Greenpeace demands end to 'bottom-trawling'

Greenpeace has called on the Government to exert pressure within the EU to help protect ocean life threatened with destruction by fishing vessels.

The environmental organisation said the EU was trying to block moves by the United Nations to impose a moratorium on the controversial practice of "bottom-trawling" in international waters.

A Greenpeace vessel, the Esperanza, has docked in Dublin today to highlight the issue.

Speaking from the ship, campaigner Vanessa Atkinson said some Irish vessels were heavily involved in the controversial fishing practice.
