Gardaí target would-be drink drivers

Gardaí are to target drivers close to licensed premises in a bid to cut the number of road deaths during this Bank Holiday weekend.

Six people were killed in road accidents during the same weekend last year while almost 300 accidents were reported to gardaí.

Supt John Farrelly of the Garda National Traffic Bureau has warned that a huge number of people are still drink driving although the number being caught is increasing.

Gardaíí will now monitor the activities of people around licensed premises according to Supt Farrelly.

Those convicted of drink driving automatically lose their licence and may have to re-sit the driving test, but some believe they are invincible, according to Supt Farrelly.

“They think they can go into a pub or a club and drink what they believe is their limit, get into a car and drive on. The bottom line is that someday their time will come - whether we catch them or whether they crash," he said.
