Graphic images of rotten lungs and a dead body could feature on cigarette packets sold in Ireland from next year.

The pictures were unveiled today by European Health Commissioner David Byrne and are the next stage in the EU's fight against tobacco.

Forty-two images and new written warnings have been devised for a multi-million euro media campaign.

It will be left to individual member states to decide which pictures and captions to use.
