Bloody Sunday soldiers set to challenge Saville ruling

The British soldiers accused of murder on Bloody Sunday are believed to be planning a legal challenge to the Saville Inquiry’s decision not to use criminal standards of proof.

The inquiry has indicated that it may make findings against certain soldiers even if the finding cannot be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The soldiers' legal action could delay the workings of the tribunal and could also lead to a watered down report into the reasons why 14 unarmed civilians were shot dead by the British army in Derry on January 30, 1972.
