Central Bank reports €1.6bn increase in personal debt

Irish people borrowed an additional €1.6bn last month, according to figures released today by the Central Bank.

The bank said total debt grew by around 1% to €185bn in August, mainly due to a €1.3bn increase in mortgage lending.
