Bus transport key to Car Free Day in cities

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) has confirmed details of the main public transport initiatives throughout the country for European Car Free Day 2004.

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) has confirmed details of the main public transport initiatives throughout the country for European Car Free Day 2004.

Dublin Bus, Bus Eireann and DART will all be supporting the initiative, which takes place next Wednesday, September 22.

Bus Eireann will provide free city and town bus services in Balbriggan, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Dungarvan, Sligo and Westport.

Free Bus Eireann park n’ ride services will also be provided in Waterford and Cork. In Dublin, Dublin Bus and DART will be giving away 20,000 free prepaid tickets throughout the city in advance of Car Free Day.

This is Ireland's fifth year of participation in Car Free Day. Some 20 Irish cities and towns have confirmed that they will take part this year including: Balbriggan, Blanchardstown, Clare, Clonakilty, Cork, Dublin, Dungarvan, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick city and Limerick county, Navan, Portmarnock, Portrane, Sligo, Tralee, Tullamore, Waterford, Westport and Wicklow. Seventeen towns and cities in Ireland took part in 2003.

More than 1,000 cities in Europe are expected to participate in the event this year.

Summary of plans for Car Free Day in key centres throughout the country:

Cork City

The following street will be closed from 10am until 4pm - St Patrick’s Street, Oliver Plunkett Street, Maylor Street, Caroline Street, Emmet Place, Drawbridge Street, Faulkener’s Lane, Bowling Green Street and Perry Street. There will be free travel on all scheduled Bus Eireann city services from 10am-4pm. Free Park n’ Ride services will also be provided all day (including peak hours).

Waterford

The following street will be closed from 11am until 5.30pm - Little Patrick Street, Jenkins Lane, Peter Street West, Arundle Square, Broad Street, Patrick Street to junction with Stephen Street and Michael Street. There will be a free Bus Eireann city service from 7.00am – 7.00pm, and a free Bus Eireann Park n’ Ride service from: The IDA Technology Park (Cork Road) between 7.00am - 7pm. Buses every 30 minutes to City Centre.

Limerick City

The following street will be closed from 10am until 4pm - Bedford Row from Henry St junction to O’Connell Street, William Street from Sarsfield Street junction to Roches Street junction, Thomas Street from O’Connell Street junction to William Street junction. There will be a free Bus Eireann city Service from 10am-4pm.

Sligo

O’Connell Street will be closed from 11.30am until 6pm. There will be a free Bus Eireann city service throughout the day.

Galway

There will be a free Bus Eireann city service from 10am-4pm.

Dublin

Dublin Bus and Dart giving away free 20,000 prepaid tickets around the city before Car Free Day. Bull Island will be closed all day. Grattan Crescent in Inchicore will be closed between 12noon and 3pm.
