Independent TD unhappy at Higgins
Dublin independent TD Finian McGrath has criticised Labour for not endorsing Michael D Higgins as a presidential candidate.
The Parliamentary Party has recommended against the former minister's name going forward.
Dublin North Central Deputy Finian McGrath has said it is a shame Labour has backed away from a contest.
“I'm extremely disappointed that the Labour Party didn't have the bottle or the courage to nominate a very good candidate like Michael D Higgins. Michael D has made a major contribution to Irish society and I think he should have been in the race.”
Meanwhile the Green Party has called for Labour to back their Presidential candidate, Eamon Ryan. Deputy Ryan must be endorsed at a meeting of his National Council on Saturday.
Party Leader Trevor Sargent has said Labour can ensure a Presidential election by providing the necessary number of nominations required.
“Time is of the essence here and if the Labour Party are serious about putting forward a credible candidate - and I clearly see Eamon Ryan as a credible candidate - I would ask them to act swiftly as every day is important in this context.”
