A spokesman for former MEP Rosemary Dana Scallon has confirmed that she is seeking a nomination to challenge Mary McAleese for the presidency of Ireland next month.

Ms Scallon is expected to canvass several county councils in an effort to secure a nomination for the October 22 election. She needs the support of four councils to get nominated.

If she succeeds in securing the support, the former Connacht/Ulster MEP is expected to be the only challenger to Mrs McAleese, who is expected to nominate herself for re-election this week.
