Govt abandons plan to levy carbon taxes from next year

The Government has reportedly abandoned its plan to introduce carbon taxes in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Environment Minister Martin Cullen was planning to introduce the tax in January, but reports this morning said his cabinet colleagues believed the environmental benefits would not justify the increased cost on business and consumers.

The proposed tax was part of the Government’s efforts to meet its Kyoto Protocol commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
