A Fianna Fáil councillor has resigned from the party after conceding that he is being investigated in connection with the alleged misappropriation of road funds in Galway.

Michael Fahy, from Ardrahan, represents the Loughrea area on Galway County Council.

He said today that he was resigning voluntarily from Fianna Fáil pending the completion of the garda investigation into the matter.

Reports yesterday said a file on the case was due to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions shortly.

The allegations against Mr Fahy are believed to date back several years, but were only reported to gardaí by the council in recent months.
