Two arrested over stabbing death

Two men were arrested by Garda detectives today after a man was stabbed to death in Waterford city.

The pair, both in their 20s, were held by gardai in the city this afternoon and are being questioned at Waterford Garda station.

Simon Carton was found with fatal stab wounds at a flat in the Barrack Street area of the city at 8pm last night.

He was single and unemployed, and originally from the Gorey area of County Wexford.

The 33-year-old was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital and died in the early hours of this morning. He had multiple stab wounds.

It is believed a number of people were in the flat near the city centre around the time of the attack.

Garda officers have carried out a technical examination of the scene and are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area between 8pm and 9pm to contact them at Waterford Station.

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy has been informed and a full post mortem exam is due to be carried out later.
