The Government saved almost €208m in a crackdown on social welfare fraud in the first six months of this year, according to figures released today by the Department of Social and Family Affairs.

The Government saved almost €208m in a crackdown on social welfare fraud in the first six months of this year, according to figures released today by the Department of Social and Family Affairs.

The department said just over €96m of the sum was saved in the second quarter of the year, €33m in unemployment benefits and €27m in payments to single-parent families.
