An 11-year-old girl has died after the car she was travelling in crashed near Fahan in Co Donegal this morning.

Four other members of the girl’s family were also injured in the single-vehicle accident, which happened at around 5.40am.

The family had been travelling to Belfast Airport to begin a holiday.

Gardaí said the accident happened after they turned back home from their journey to collect forgotten passports.

Superintendent Vincent O’Brien of Buncrana Garda Station said: “There was heavy fog at the time and the road was wet and slippy. One of the rear-seat passengers, an 11-year-old girl, was killed.”

The girl died at the scene, while the other four occupants of the car were taken to hospitals in Letterkenny and Derry.
