The Government is reportedly set to allow wind farms to be built in areas protected because of their scenic beauty or the presence of rare species.

Reports this morning said planning guidelines due to be published by Environment Minister Martin Cullen today would allow wind farms to be built in Special Areas of Conservation (SACs).

An Bord Pleanala has rejected several applications for permission to construct wind farms in such areas, which are protected due to their natural beauty or because they are a habitat for rare birds and insects.
