Fine Gael have said that it would be “utterly wrong and quite illegal” for the Government to retain centrally the proceeds of the sale of local authority housing to tenants.

According to spokesman Brian Hayes, the current housing legislation does not allow the Government to do this, and should they attempt to introduce new legislation to that effect, his party will oppose it in the houses of the Oireachtas.
