Redmond wins costs after corruption conviction quashed

Former assistant Dublin City and County manager George Redmond was today awarded costs for his successful appeal hearing.

Mr Redmond, 80, had his corruption conviction quashed this week after the court of criminal appeal ruled that bank records rendered the conviction “unsafe and unsatisfactory”.

He applied today for the costs of both the original trial and the appeal but was refused the costs of the trial.

His lawyers speculated that he could be awarded up to €70,000 for the appeal.

The former planning official was accused of accepting a IR£10,000 bribe from garage owner Brendan Fassnidge in relation to the sale of a right of way.

Although Mr Fassnidge, as the key witness, claimed he had withdrawn the money in cash from his account in March 1988, the bank records showed no proof of this.
